The aim of TOPIK organized by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) is to promote the Korean language and officially assesses the Korean Language proficiency of the test taker. Unlike the KIIP (Korea Immigration Integration Program), the TOPIK result is valid for only two years and it is taken by the following target groups.
- Job opportunities in Korea: Having at least TOPIK level 1 is enough for some companies to considerate you for employment compared to other foreigners. The higher your level, the easier the chance of being employed
- Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) scholars: It is a prerequisite for KGSP students to pass the TOPIK with at least level 3 before admission to their undergraduate or graduate programs.
- Visa Application: TOPIK level increases your chance of getting a long term visa. For instance F2 7 (Long term residence) visa awards extra points to applicants with TOPIK results.
- Admission into Korean Universities by Foreigners: Some Korean universities expect foreign students to obtain at least a level 3 TOPIK level before or after admission.

Now you know the relevance of taking the TOPIK test. If you ever get the chance to take the test, do not think twice just go for it and you will have no regrets. Opportunities always meet the prepared mind. While in Korea, make use of the available opportunities. In the next post, I will break down the TOPIK tests.
